Lee Jae-myung, on Chae Sang-byeong's Mother's Letter: "Will Ensure Special Prosecutor Law Passes to Reveal the Truth"
"The Regime Trying to Overcome Bereaved Parents Can Never Last Long"
Emphasizes Thorough Accountability for the Accident
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, emphasized on the 12th that "the Democratic Party will definitely pass the special investigation law in the 22nd National Assembly to clearly reveal the truth behind the unjust death" in relation to a letter written by the mother of Marine Corps soldier Chae Sang-byeong, who died in the line of duty last July, urging for a thorough investigation ahead of the first anniversary of the accident.
On the same day, Lee posted on Facebook, starting with "In a normal country, the soul of the unjustly deceased young soldier should have been comforted through a fact-finding investigation, and the bereaved family and comrades should have been consoled." He continued, "However, until now, as the first anniversary of Chae Sang-byeong approaches, the heartless power obsessed with covering up the truth has killed the young soldier twice or thrice and has reopened the wounds of the bereaved family."
Lee expressed his condolences, saying, "I offer my deep condolences and heavy resolve to the bereaved family who must be enduring each day with immeasurable sorrow," and stressed, "The Democratic Party will definitely pass the special investigation law in the 22nd National Assembly to clearly reveal the truth behind the unjust death and thoroughly hold those responsible for the accident accountable."
He also conveyed a call to the government and ruling party. Lee said, "If there is even a little sympathy for the agonizing pain of the bereaved, join the path of an unreserved fact-finding investigation," and urged, "Do not reject the mother's plea to prevent the same tragedy from happening again to our soldiers."
He raised his voice, saying, "A regime that tries to overcome parents who have lost their children can never last long," and "The state must respond to the simple wish of the people who want to spend the rest of their lives mourning the child they lost first."
