Suncheon City Hosts 'Small and Medium-Sized City Old Downtown Revitalization Symposium'

Exploring Responses to Regional Extinction and Revitalization of Old Downtown Areas
Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu) and the Presidential Committee on National Architecture Policy (Chairman Kwon Young-gul, hereinafter referred to as the NCNAP) announced that they will hold a "Symposium on Revitalizing Old Downtowns in Small and Medium Cities in Response to Local Extinction" at the Ecobusiness Center Conference Hall near Suncheon Station on the 14th.
The symposium will be held in two parts with the participation of local governments, universities, urban regeneration officials, and citizens from across the country.
The first part will focus on "Revitalizing Old Downtowns through the Creation of Local Content Towns in Provincial Cities," and the second part will be on "Revitalizing Old Downtowns in Small and Medium Cities in Response to Local Extinction."
The first part consists of a keynote speech, two thematic presentations, and a panel discussion.
The keynote speech is titled "Plans for Creating the Suncheon Garden Content Town," and the thematic presentations are "Current Status of the Domestic Local Content Ecosystem and Town Development Plans" and "Current Status and Plans (Draft) for Urban Regeneration in Suncheon City."
This will be followed by discussions and proposals for revitalizing Suncheon’s old downtown.
The second part, moderated by the NCNAP, will include three thematic presentations and a discussion session.
The thematic presentations are "The Old Downtown is a University," "Higher Lifelong Education in Collaboration with the Local Community," and "Effects and Implications of the Seoul Campus Town Project for Regional Revitalization."
In the subsequent discussion, members from the NCNAP, universities, and architectural experts will engage in a heated debate to devise measures for revitalizing old downtowns in small and medium cities in response to local extinction.
This event is hosted by the NCNAP, organized by Suncheon City, and supported by Suncheon National University, Suncheon Cultural Foundation, and the Korean Institute of Urban Design.
In particular, many students from Suncheon National University are expected to attend, showing deep interest in the extinction of local areas and regional universities.

A city official stated, "Local extinction has become a major challenge for the nation and local communities," adding, "We hope this symposium will be a valuable opportunity to find effective countermeasures against local extinction."
