Suseong Webtoon "Film Production and Localization Are Important for Webtoon Market Growth"
Suseong Webtoon commissioned the mobile user survey platform Kratos to gather opinions necessary for the growth of the webtoon market.
According to a survey conducted on 2,142 respondents, 53.9% chose that K-Webtoons should focus on "movie and drama production." 24% answered that "localization" is important. 12.5% of respondents thought that "strengthening intellectual property rights" is necessary.
Among the 2,142 survey participants, the male ratio was 66.1%. The age groups of people in their 40s (38.7%) and 50s (30.5%) accounted for more than half. The residential areas were Incheon and Gyeonggi at 33.2%, Seoul at 18.8%, and Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Daejeon·Chungcheong at 15.6% and 10.4%, respectively. The sampling error was ±3.0% with a confidence level of 95%, and the survey period lasted two days.
Suseong Webtoon, a KOSDAQ-listed company, operates a forklift and logistics equipment business capable of achieving stable and steady sales. Last year, Toomics Holdings, which has more than 50 million subscribers worldwide, became the largest shareholder, giving momentum to the webtoon business. Suseong Webtoon’s affiliate ‘Toomics’ serialized the original webtoon of the drama Deliveryman, starring Kim Woo-bin and Song Seung-heon, which aired on Netflix from 2016 to 2019. Deliveryman was praised across the industry for both its novelty and directing skills, ranking first for two consecutive weeks on Netflix’s non-English language charts at the time of airing, thus achieving both popularity and commercial success.
Webtoon is a portmanteau of internet (Web) and cartoon, a neologism first created in Korea in 1999. It is currently used as a proper noun referring to Korean web-based comics both domestically and internationally. As the origin country of the term webtoon, the outlook for the global webtoon market, including Korea, is generally optimistic. Global market research firm Market Research forecasts that the global webtoon market will approach 74 trillion KRW by 2030.
