Democratic Labor Union Elects 8 Vice Chairpersons for 11th Term at Temporary Delegate Conference
3 Women on the List, 5 on the General List
Public Activities Begin on the 2nd of Next Month
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) announced on the 29th that it elected 8 vice chairpersons for the 11th term at the 78th Extraordinary Delegates' Conference. The newly elected vice chairpersons will lead the KCTU together with the 4th directly elected leadership from next year until 2026.
On the 28th at 2 p.m., the KCTU held the 78th Extraordinary Delegates' Conference simultaneously at 16 bases nationwide, including Seoul, and elected 3 vice chairpersons from the women's list and 5 from the general list. Three candidates ran for the women's list, and in the first round of voting, candidates Kwon Su-jeong, Eom Mi-kyung, and Lee Mi-seon were elected. For the general list, 12 candidates ran; in the first round, candidates Jeon Ho-il and Lee Yang-su were elected, and in the second round, candidates Ham Jae-gyu, Hong Ji-wook, and Han Seong-gyu were elected.

View original imageAccording to KCTU regulations, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast to be elected. In the second round of voting, approval or disapproval is asked for the top candidates within the quota to finalize the election results. There are 1,859 delegates with voting rights in the KCTU vice chairperson election, of whom 1,287 participated in the vote.
Yoon Taek-geun, acting head of the KCTU, said in his opening remarks, "Throughout 2023, the KCTU has tirelessly fought against the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's attempts to destroy labor unions and the deterioration of labor laws." He added, "This delegates' conference is the occasion to elect the leadership responsible for the KCTU for the next three years. Let us unite the expectations and will of 1.2 million union members and successfully carry out the delegates' conference with strength."

The newly formed KCTU leadership will hold a commencement ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the 2nd of next month in front of the memorial of martyr Jeon Tae-il at the Maseok National Democratic Martyrs' Cemetery and will begin public activities.
