[2023 National Assembly Audit] Seoul National University President: "A Detailed Roadmap Is Needed to Prevent the 'Medical School Craze' Caused by Quota Expansion"
Yoo Hong-rim, President of Seoul National University, stated at the 2023 National Assembly audit that a detailed roadmap and support system are necessary to prevent the 'medical school craze' caused by the expansion of medical school quotas.
On the 24th, during the National Assembly Education Committee audit, in response to a question from Ahn Min-seok, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, who asked, "Since the medical school quotas are increasing, it seems the (medical school) craze will intensify. Do you have any countermeasures in mind?" Yoo said, "Although the government and the National Assembly will plan, a precise roadmap and support system must be established to prevent concerns from becoming reality."
When asked by Ahn whether he expects a surge in repeat applicants due to the expansion of medical school quotas, Yoo replied, "Depending on how the concentration on medical schools is managed, the phenomenon could be suppressed, but there are also concerns."
Regarding whether he has any suggestions, Yoo said, "(The increase in medical school quotas) is considered future workforce development in light of upcoming manpower supply and demand," adding, "To allocate essential regional medical personnel, an incentive structure must be established, and it is necessary to reorganize the training system for advanced industry personnel such as doctors and scientists."
There were also calls for Seoul National University to lead research on the development plans for national universities, including Seoul National University Hospital. Yoo responded, "Although some efforts have been made previously, we have decided to establish a collaborative system from the perspective of various social contributions, and we are preparing a permanent organization for this purpose," adding, "We will also review the matters you mentioned."
