Confirmed Cases of Lumpy Skin Disease in Cattle at Three Livestock Farms in Ganghwa-do, Incheon
Cases of 'Lumpy Skin Disease,' a viral disease affecting cattle, have been confirmed at livestock farms on Ganghwa Island, Incheon.
Ganghwa County announced on the 24th that suspected reports of Lumpy Skin Disease were received from three livestock farms and all were confirmed positive after testing. These farms, located in Yangsa-myeon, Hajom-myeon, and Hwado-myeon, are raising 20, 46, and 97 cattle respectively.
Ganghwa County is culling all dairy cows and Korean native cattle raised at the confirmed farms and is undertaking measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including movement restrictions and disinfection. Additionally, on the morning of the same day, a suspicion report was received for two Korean native cattle at a farm in Songhae-myeon, and further detailed testing is planned.
In Ganghwa County, where confirmed cases have been reported, approximately 21,000 cattle are raised across about 500 farms. A county official stated, "If livestock sheds are found within a 500-meter radius of the confirmed farms, culling will also be carried out there."
Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral disease that infects only cattle through blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes, with a mortality rate below 10%. When it occurs, it can lead to cattle miscarriages, infertility, and reduced milk production, and is designated as a first-class livestock infectious disease.
