The government will hold the 'UN Global Digital Compact (GDC) Asia-Pacific Regional Consultation Meeting,' which discusses global digital norms, for two days starting on the 16th at COEX in Seoul. The GDC is a document proposed by the UN Secretary-General that contains principles, objectives, and action plans for digital cooperation, aiming for adoption in September next year.
This meeting will be held under the theme of 'The Future of Global Digital and Data Cooperation.' Government officials from the digital sector in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as stakeholders from international organizations, companies, academia, and civil society, will attend. They plan to discuss matters to be reflected in the GDC draft to be adopted at the UN level in September next year.
The government participated in eight GDC thematic discussions held from March to June at the UN Headquarters, covering topics such as online human rights, artificial intelligence and new technologies, sustainable development goals, and digital public goods.
Through these, the government introduced its policies related to the digital sector, including establishing a new digital order, and provided opinions on the direction of global digital norm formation, actively engaging in GDC discussions.
This meeting is significant in that it advances previous discussions while listening to the positions of Asia-Pacific countries and various stakeholders.
At the opening ceremony, opening remarks were delivered by Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT; Oh Young-joo, Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Seo Bo-ram, Director General of the Digital Government Office at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
This was followed by congratulatory speeches from Amandeep Gill, UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, and Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Secretary-General of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Experts will also give presentations and hold discussions on various topics such as promoting human rights in the digital era, sustainable development goals, and digital public goods.
