Conflicting Reactions from Ruling and Opposition Parties on the Appointment of Ministers Shin Won-sik and Yoo In-chon: "Right Person" vs. "Personnel Disaster"
Yoon Appoints Shin Won-sik as Defense Minister and Yoo In-chon as Culture Ministry Minister on the 7th
On the 7th, the ruling and opposition parties expressed mixed reactions to President Yoon Seok-yeol's appointment of Shin Won-sik as Minister of National Defense and Yoo In-chon as Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The People Power Party evaluated the two ministers as having "extensive experience and expertise in the fields of defense, security, culture, and arts." Spokesperson Kim Ye-ryeong said in a statement that day, "We can confidently say they are the best candidates to embody the government's policy direction and national philosophy," adding, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration will prove South Korea's infinite potential and capabilities to the world as a global pivotal nation."
Spokesperson Kim described nominee Shin as "a strong expression of the government's determination to prevent further security gaps and to respond swiftly to the rapidly changing world order and the severe international situation in Northeast Asia." Regarding Minister Yoo, she said, "It means to promptly ease unnecessary regulations and activate investments to ensure that 'K-Content' can have solid competitiveness and to accelerate the promotion of the culture and arts industry."
On the other hand, the Democratic Party criticized the appointments as a "personnel disaster." Chief Spokesperson Kwon Chil-seung said at a National Assembly briefing, "It became clear through the confirmation hearings that appointing these two ministers is a personnel disaster," and criticized, "Are they exercising a veto against public opinion?"
He continued, "Minister Shin had already been evaluated by the public for defending military coups and supporting the traitor Lee Wan-yong even before the confirmation hearings," and added, "Nevertheless, President Yoon appointed Minister Shin, clearly showing his political views and historical awareness." Regarding Minister Yoo, he emphasized, "During the confirmation hearing, she consistently showed shameless behavior by denying the cultural blacklist and even denied the widely remembered controversy over her use of abusive language," stressing, "This appointment raises strong doubts about how President Yoon views the people."

The Justice Party also expressed a negative stance on the ministerial appointments. Justice Party floor spokesperson Kang Eun-mi said in a written briefing, "They appointed a person who is no different from a remnant of the Hanahoe as the top defense official, and placed a former 'little general' of the Lee Myung-bak administration at the forefront of media and cultural control."
