Four People Booked for Secretly Burying 17,500 Tons of Waste Gypsum at Changwon Camping Site Construction Site
A group caught secretly burying waste at a campsite construction site was apprehended by the police.
The Changwon Jungbu Police Station in Gyeongnam announced on the 22nd that they arrested two people, including landfill contractor Mr. A, for violating the Waste Management Act, and booked two others, including a waste management company employee in his 40s, Mr. B, without detention.
According to the police, Mr. A and others are suspected of burying 17,500 tons of waste gypsum at a campsite construction site in Anmin-dong, Changwon City, between November 2022 and February 2023.
Waste gypsum is a byproduct generated after extracting phosphorus from phosphate ore and contains radioactive materials, making it classified as waste that cannot be used as soil fill material.
It was revealed that they committed the crime in collusion with Mr. A, who was performing the campsite landfill work at the time, in order to reduce disposal costs after entrusting waste disposal through a third-party company.
