'Tylenol' Synonym 'Yanssen' Disappears... Changed to 'Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine'
Global Big Pharma Behind 'Tylenol' and 'Stelara'
Changes Following J&J Brand Integration Strategy
The pharmaceutical brand 'Janssen,' with a 69-year tradition, is disappearing. Even after being acquired by Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in 1961, the name was maintained, enhancing its reputation globally with the famous painkiller 'Tylenol' and solidifying its position as a global big pharma company. However, J&J has now changed the name to 'Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine' as part of a brand innovation initiative.
On the 14th (local time), J&J revealed this brand strategy under the plan to consolidate the healthcare capabilities by integrating the brands of the medical device and pharmaceutical business divisions under the single name J&J. Janssen, which previously handled the pharmaceutical business, will change its name to J&J Innovative Medicine. The medical device business division, J&J MedTech, will retain its name. J&J MedTech had also changed its name last year from the previous J&J Medical. However, the Korean branch continues to use the existing name, Korea Johnson & Johnson Medical.
The company explained, "This announcement declares a new era for Johnson & Johnson," adding, "Based on the expertise accumulated in innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices, our goal is to provide smarter, less invasive, and more personalized solutions to prevent, treat, and ultimately cure complex diseases."
Joaquin Duato, Chairman of the Board and CEO of J&J, stated, "J&J, focusing on both innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices, has the capability to innovate across the entire healthcare spectrum in ways no other company can. Integrating various business divisions under the single brand J&J is to faithfully meet the expectations of patients and healthcare professionals and to demonstrate our unique ability to open the future of healthcare through world-changing innovation."
Going forward, J&J Innovative Medicine will focus on developing potential future pharmaceuticals to solve challenging issues in various therapeutic areas such as cancer, immune diseases, neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and retinal diseases. The medical device business division, J&J MedTech, aims to pursue innovation in disease treatment at the intersection of biotechnology and advanced technology, focusing on developing smarter, less invasive, and personalized products and medical solutions in various surgical and interventional procedure fields.
The new J&J corporate brand was also unveiled at the announcement. The company explained, "The new corporate brand is based on the company's history and tradition, reflecting its unique inclusiveness, warmth, and consideration, while reinterpreting healthcare innovation with a modern sensibility. Each letter is designed to appear as if written in a single stroke, creating contrast that symbolizes reversal beauty and humanity."
J&J plans to use both the long version, which includes the full company name, and the short version. Especially in digital channels, the short version ‘J&J’ will be actively used to present a friendlier and more contemporary branding. Additionally, a moving logo will be introduced for use across various media environments.
Regarding colors, the existing red color is maintained but applied with a brighter and more modern tone to visually express the company's agility in responding to healthcare challenges and its evolving capabilities aligned with the times. The new ampersand (&) symbol "represents the caring nature of humanity," and "while establishing the globally recognized & symbol as Johnson & Johnson’s emblem, it also expresses the brand’s openness and the diverse connectivity necessary to realize the company’s mission."
