Yoon Sang-hyun "Possibility of North Korea-Russia Arms Deal... Concerns Over Nuclear Submarine Technology Transfer"
People Power Party Lawmaker SBS Radio Interview
"Russia's Most Needed Items Are Shells and Missiles"
Regarding the negotiations between North Korea and Russia on arms deals, Yoon Sang-hyun, a member of the People Power Party, expressed concerns that North Korea might receive advanced technology from Russia necessary for developing nuclear-powered submarines and satellites.
On the 6th, Yoon appeared on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show' and said, "What Russia needs most are shells, missiles, and ammunition," adding, "China is currently not providing support publicly. In that case, the country that can provide support is North Korea."
He continued, "Considering weapon system compatibility, the country that can provide the weapons Russia needs most is North Korea, and North Korea requires nuclear submarines, military reconnaissance satellites, or intercontinental ballistic missiles that could be game changers in the strategic security landscape of the Korean Peninsula."
Yoon also said, "(North Korea) has successfully conducted tests to extend the range of its intercontinental ballistic missiles to 15,000 km. What is now important is the reentry technology, where the missile exits the atmosphere and then reenters it," explaining, "The country that can receive this technology is Russia."
Yoon pointed out that since both countries have clear mutual benefits, there is a possibility that arms deals will take place. He said, "If a war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula, what North Korea needs most is to prevent U.S. military intervention," adding, "To prevent U.S. military intervention, what must be done is to threaten to attack the U.S."
He continued, "Then how would they attack? They need the capability to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear submarine technology," and said, "With nuclear submarine technology, they could stay underwater for about three to six months near Los Angeles and strike from nearby waters. North Korea is definitely trying to obtain such technology, as well as military reconnaissance satellite technology, from Russia."
