Police Conduct Special Crackdown on Insurance Fraud for 2 Months
873 Cases and 2,786 People Arrested in First Half-Year Crackdown... 22 Detained
The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 31st that it will conduct a special crackdown on insurance fraud for two months from next month 1st to October 30th.
Insurance fraud, which damages the soundness of insurance finances and increases the burden of insurance premiums, has become increasingly serious, with the amount detected last year exceeding 1 trillion won for the first time ever. However, the number of arrests and suspects has continuously decreased, prompting this decision.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service, the amount of insurance fraud detected was 898.6 billion won in 2020, increased to 943.4 billion won in 2021, and recorded 1.0818 trillion won in 2022. However, the number of suspects arrested for insurance fraud over the past three years decreased from 11,606 in 2020 to 9,673 in 2021, and 4,903 in 2022.
Accordingly, the police conducted a special crackdown on insurance fraud for two months from May, arresting a total of 873 cases and 2,786 suspects, detaining 22 people, which represents an increase in both the number of cases (13.8%) and suspects (64.6%) compared to the same period last year.
Based on the results of the crackdown in the first half of the year, the police plan to focus investigative efforts on organized and malicious insurance fraud, including planned insurance fraud caused by intentional accidents, organized insurance fraud involving corporate brokers and hospitals, and various public insurance-related frauds such as long-term care insurance and health insurance.
To this end, the police will continue to operate dedicated insurance fraud investigation teams established at police agencies in cities and provinces nationwide and carry out nationwide crackdown activities. In addition, they will actively utilize the "City/Province Police Agency-centered Reception and Assignment System," which systematizes case reception and assignment, to enhance the fairness and professionalism of investigations.
