Lawrence Weiner, who worked between New York and Amsterdam, is recognized as a key contributor to the movements of Minimalism and Conceptual Art alongside Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Dan Flavin, Joseph Kosuth, and Sol LeWitt.
One of his representative works is the 'language sculpture' series introduced around the late 1960s. In these works, he regarded language as a material and used it as a sculptural concept, which created a significant impact.
The exhibition will showcase 47 representative language sculptures, including 'UNDER THE SUN' (1999/2000) and 'A BIT OF MATTER AND A LITTLE BIT MORE' (1976).
In addition to the 47 key language sculptures, the exhibition features editions, drawings, posters, and motion drawings, providing a broad overview of Weiner's artistic world. Visitors can experience over 60 years of Weiner's work in one place, from early 1970s pieces like 'SMASHED TO PIECES' (1971) and 'TO SEE AND BE SEEN' (1972) to 'AN OBJECT TOSSED FROM ONE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER' (1988), 'UNDER THE SUN' (1999/2000), 'ON VIEW' (2020), and 'REMOVED FROM VIEW' (2020).

View original imageReflecting the artist's interest in diverse cultural elements, Amorepacific Museum of Art draws attention by exhibiting ancient art collections alongside the language sculptures. Under three themes?'Subject and Object,' 'Process,' and 'Simultaneous Reality'?the harmony between language sculptures and ancient artworks allows visitors to experience the beauty of East and West, past and present, all in one place.
Seven works, including 'AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE' (1998), are installed with Korean and English titles, demonstrating the expansion of meaning that transcends the boundaries of language and culture.
Respecting the artist's philosophy of rejecting a single specific meaning in his works, the exhibition does not provide detailed descriptions of the pieces. Instead, it quotes the artist’s words from interviews and other sources to offer a more direct experience of his artistic world.
A representative from Amorepacific Museum of Art said, "We hope that this large-scale retrospective of Lawrence Weiner, who built a unique artistic world using language as a material open to various interpretations, will be a valuable opportunity to expand perspectives on the world, culture, and history."
