Arson at Incheon Hyundai Market Destroys 70 Stores... Arsonist Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison
A arsonist who set fire to Incheon Hyundai Market in March this year, causing damage worth 1.2 billion won, was sentenced to a heavy prison term. The 15th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Chief Judge Ryu Hojung) sentenced A (48), who was charged with general arson of buildings and other offenses, to seven years in prison at the sentencing hearing held on the 10th.
The court explained, "The defendant appears to have committed the crime somewhat impulsively due to a habitual tendency to commit arson," and added, "He also expressed his intention in court to receive proper treatment going forward." However, the court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Despite having a history of multiple criminal punishments for arson crimes, he committed a series of arsons again," and "Considering the extensive damage and the fact that he has not been forgiven by the victims."
Earlier, the prosecution demanded a 15-year prison sentence for A at the sentencing hearing in June. A was arrested and indicted on charges of setting fire to five places, including a dish store and a small cargo truck, while intoxicated, in the Hyundai Market area of Dong-gu, Incheon, from 11:38 p.m. on March 4 for about 10 minutes.
There were no casualties at the time, but 70 out of 205 stores in the entire Hyundai Market were burned, causing property damage estimated at 1.23 billion won (according to the fire department).
A had committed arson 24 times from 2006 to 2018, was indicted four times, and served a total of 10 years in prison for the sentences received each time.
