"One Coin Worth 100 Million Won"... Gold Coins 'Tumble Out' When Digging a Farm in the US
Suspected Coins Buried During the Civil War
95% of Over 700 Discovered Are Gold Coins
Over 700 coins, believed to have been buried during the American Civil War, were discovered on a farm in the United States. Some of these coins have been analyzed to be worth more than 100 million won each.
According to the New York Post on the 12th (local time), more than 700 coins buried on a rural farm in Kentucky were found. According to the American company GovMint, which collects rare coins, 95% of the discovered coins are gold coins. Coins such as $1, $10, and $20 gold coins minted between the 1840s and 1860s were found, and their authenticity was verified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in Florida, USA.
According to GovMint, the rarest coin among them is a $20 gold coin minted in 1863. The American science media Live Science reported that this coin is very rare because it lacks the phrase "In God We Trust," and that the value of one coin is at least $100,000 (approximately 120 million won). This phrase was added to all gold and silver coins after the Civil War ended in 1866.
Experts believe that Kentuckians may have buried money in the ground during the Civil War to prevent their property from being stolen. Ryan McNutt, an archaeology professor at Georgia Southern University, explained, "Kentucky was vulnerable to attacks as it was on the border between the North and South," adding, "During the Civil War, many Americans buried money in the ground, resulting in a huge amount of coins not circulating and disappearing."
Jeff Garrett, a coin dealer at GovMint, said, "I always get excited when someone asks me for advice about discovering rare coins, but having the opportunity to handle these coins will be one of the highlights of my career." He added, "The importance of this discovery cannot be overstated."
