To apply for the pilot trainee selection exam, candidates must have served as a captain on a vessel with a total tonnage of 6,000 tons or more for at least three years.
The average age of the final successful candidates is 45, with the youngest being 37 and the oldest 59. By port, there are 6 candidates for Busan Port, 5 for Incheon Port, 4 for Yeosu Port, 3 for Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port, 2 each for Masan Port and Daesan Port, and 1 each for Ulsan Port, Gunsan Port, Mokpo Port, and Jeju Port.

The successful candidates will be assigned to the port where they will work within this month and will undergo more than 200 practical pilot training sessions over six months at the respective pilot station. If they pass the pilot exam held early next year, they will be officially issued a pilot license. The average annual salary of a pilot is 120 million KRW, and it is known that, depending on experience, it can reach up to 500 million KRW.
