Professor Jeong Seung-yong of Seoul National University College of Medicine Awarded the 22nd Boryung Cancer Academic Award
Boryeong and the Korea Cancer Research Foundation announced on the 23rd that Professor Seung-Yong Jeong of the Department of Surgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine has been selected as the recipient of the 22nd Boryeong Cancer Academic Award. The award ceremony will be held on the same day at the Lee Kun-hee Hall in the Samsung Cancer Research Building at Seoul National University, where the winner will receive a prize of 30 million KRW and a plaque.
Professor Jeong is recognized as a world authority in colorectal cancer research. He has served as the Director of the Colorectal Cancer Center at the National Cancer Center Hospital and the Director of the Colorectal Cancer Center at Seoul National University Cancer Hospital, and is currently a professor in the Department of Surgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine.
Notably, in 2014, he published a paper in the world-renowned cancer journal Lancet Oncology comparing long-term survival rates between laparoscopic and open surgery for rectal cancer, becoming the first in the world to demonstrate oncological safety of laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer. Furthermore, in 2021, through a 10-year follow-up study, he provided evidence confirming the safety of laparoscopic surgery, which played a crucial role in establishing laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer as the standard surgical method.

The Boryeong Cancer Academic Award was jointly established in 2002 by the Korea Cancer Research Foundation and Boryeong to honor scholars who have dedicated themselves to research for cancer eradication and the improvement of public health. Over the past 22 years, it has been highly regarded in the academic community for encouraging domestic oncology research activities, discovering academically significant results, and fostering both internal and external interest in cancer research.
