Core 'Life Cycle Assessment' Contributing to Eco-Friendliness... Applied in P&G Product Development
Korea P&G, Environmental Sustainability Consumer Awareness Survey
Focus on Plastic Separation and Disposal for Eco-Friendly Practices in Korea
For a Sustainable Earth, Use Well as Much as You Dispose Well
Global consumer goods company P&G announced on the 23rd that it designs products and operates its business from the perspective of 'Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)' so that consumers can contribute to environmental sustainability throughout their daily lives. LCA refers to an approach that measures and evaluates the environmental impacts occurring at each stage of a product's life cycle, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, use, and disposal, and seeks to improve them.
According to P&G's recent 'P&G 2023 Global Environmental Sustainability Survey' conducted with 10,000 people across 10 countries, Korean consumers' willingness to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle (81%) was higher than the global average (78%), including the United States and France, but the level of actual practice was 65%, slightly below the global average of 66.5%. Domestic consumers' eco-friendly practices were focused on waste management such as 'plastic separation and disposal (86%)'.
P&G emphasized that how products are used is as important as purchasing eco-friendly products and disposing of them properly. According to P&G's survey, 60% of the environmental impact of laundry detergent occurs during the consumer's use at home. Reducing power consumption in the process of heating cold water to warm water and decreasing the number of rinses can also reduce the environmental footprint. It was explained that the 'P&G Downy Deep Clean Laundry Detergent' focuses on excellent cleaning power even in cold water, considering the advantage of saving up to 90% of electricity compared to warm water washing. It was developed to save up to 60 liters of water by reducing one rinse cycle while ensuring no residue remains.
Korea P&G is also continuing activities to raise awareness of the concept of LCA and the importance of consumer participation. Last year, it partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to hold an environmental lecture program called 'Panda Talk' on the theme of LCA, and recently held a roundtable with experts from academia and civic groups to introduce the concept of life cycle assessment in detail and share meaningful activities that consumers can practice from the LCA perspective.
