The First Suspected Heat-Related Death This Year in Changnyeong... Heatstroke During Onion Harvesting
On the 21st, the first suspected heat-related death of the year occurred in Changnyeong, Gyeongnam.
According to the Changnyeong Police Station on the 25th, a man in his 40s, Mr. A, collapsed and died from heatstroke while taking a break in the shade after harvesting fully grown onions at an onion farm in Yueo-myeon, Changnyeong-gun at around 4:37 PM on the 21st.
He was identified as a Chinese national who recently entered Korea on a short-term visa. He was transported to the hospital following a report from a colleague but ultimately passed away.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and medical staff determined that Mr. A died from a heat-related illness, as there were no special external injuries on his body.
The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the death based on witness statements and medical assessments.
Changnyeong was also the location of last year’s first suspected heat-related death, and this year’s incident occurred 41 days earlier than July 1st of last year.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that the highest daytime temperature in Changnyeong-gun on the day of the incident was 30.2℃, and the temperature around 4 PM, when Mr. A collapsed, was 29.7℃.
