Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo: "Recognizing the Seriousness of Jeonse Fraud... Doing Our Best to Support Victims"
"We recognize the seriousness of the Jeonse fraud damage. We will actively work to help the victims." Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, made this promise after meeting with local Jeonse fraud victims.
On the 19th, the Daejeon city government announced that Mayor Lee held a meeting with Jeonse fraud victims the previous day to directly listen to their difficulties and suggestions.
Four tenants living in multi-family houses located in Naedong, Wolpyeong-dong, Goejeong-dong, Doma-dong, and Taepyeong-dong attended the meeting. They are facing a situation where they cannot recover deposits ranging from 100 million to 200 million KRW due to the auction application by senior mortgage holders.
During the meeting, the victims proposed ▲ postponement of auctions and granting tenants the right of first refusal ▲ strict punishment for illegal acts by landlords and licensed real estate agents ▲ prompt investigation by judicial authorities ▲ relaxation of eligibility criteria for Jeonse loan support (such as total income under 70 million KRW) ▲ obligation for real estate agents to verify and notify senior deposit status before contract signing.
In response, Mayor Lee said, "It is even more regrettable because most victims are young people and newlyweds. The city recognizes the seriousness of the ongoing Jeonse fraud damage."
He added, "We will propose improvements in laws and systems to central government ministries, and actively support what the city can provide. We will do our best to support victims so they can overcome adversity and stand up again."
Mayor Lee also emphasized the role of real estate agents in preventing Jeonse fraud by explaining senior claims during lease contracts.
Currently, Daejeon city has secured 59 public rental housing units to protect victims forcibly evicted due to Jeonse fraud and is supporting low-interest and interest-free Jeonse loans.
