Memorial Ceremony Held for Former Prime Minister Nam Duck-woo on the 10th Anniversary of His Passing
Over 60 Political, Government, and Business Leaders Attend on the 18th
The Korea Advancement Forum Foundation held a memorial ceremony for former Prime Minister Nam Deok-woo on the 10th anniversary of his passing at 11 a.m. on the 18th at the National Seoul National Cemetery, Section 3 for Meritorious Patriots.
About 60 people, including Lee Bong-seo, chairman of the Korea Advancement Forum, current and former government officials, business leaders, and representatives from the Korea International Trade Association, gathered to commemorate the late leader who led economic policies during the development era. At the memorial site, a commemorative anthology honoring former Prime Minister Nam on the 10th anniversary was distributed.
The anthology included writings from 27 notable figures expressing their condolences, including Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, LS Group Chairman Koo Ja-yeol, and former Minister of Construction Ko Byung-woo. On the day before the anniversary, May 17, Prime Minister Han recalled on Facebook, “The late Prime Minister devoted all his efforts to attracting foreign capital, which laid the foundation for exports,” and added, “Even after becoming Prime Minister, he steadfastly promoted heavy and chemical industries and the development of social overhead capital.”

Former Prime Minister Nam, who passed away on May 18, ten years ago, served as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister concurrently with Minister of Economic Planning under the Park Chung-hee administration, leading Korea’s rapid economic growth. He served as Prime Minister during the Chun Doo-hwan administration in the 1980s and later supported former President Park Geun-hye’s presidential campaign. He is regarded as the patriarch of the ‘Sogang School,’ a major school of thought in Korean economics.
