Bohae Brewery Launches Plum Highball Made with Whiskey
Bohae Brewery is launching ‘Sun (純)’, the first whiskey highball in Korea made with plums.
‘Sun (純)’ was born from the combination of Scotland whiskey, the homeland of whiskey, and Bohae Brewery’s expertise in producing plum liquor for 41 years since 1982. The product name is derived from Bohae Brewery’s traditional aged plum liquor brand ‘Maechwisun’.
The Scottish whiskey used in the plum highball ‘Sun (純)’ is made using traditional methods that include good water, high-quality malt, and peat during drying, allowing consumers to enjoy a deep taste and distinctive aroma.
Unlike other RTD (Ready To Drink) canned highballs on the market that add only aroma with oak chips or use only distilled spirits, this product is differentiated by using real whiskey.
It also contains plum extract made with Bohae’s expertise, which has produced plum products for over 40 years and created the steady seller Maechwisun, resulting in a deeper taste and aroma.
Bohae Brewery’s Haenam plum orchard is the largest in Korea, spanning 140,000 pyeong, producing top-quality green plums grown in the clean sea breeze and premium loess soil of Haenam.
Bohae Brewery boasts the largest domestic stock of plum extract, holding over 10 million liters. Among this is extract aged for more than 28 years.
This plum extract is used to make various plum liquors such as 15-year aged Maechwisun and pure gold Maechwisun.
While plum highballs are being introduced for the first time in Korea with the launch of ‘Sun (純)’, they are well known in Japan, where plum liquor is popular, as ‘umeshu whisky’.
They are highly popular because they allow people to enjoy the smoky flavor of whiskey and the refreshing taste of plums together. Bohae Brewery, which has been exporting Maechwisun to Japan since 1995, confidently presents ‘Sun (純)’, made with plums harvested directly and plum liquor production technology, expecting it to gain great popularity among young generations in Korea who seek unique flavors.
Recently, the highball market has rapidly grown with the emergence of ‘Woorini (whiskey + child)’, referring to young people who want to enjoy whiskey.
Highballs, made by mixing whiskey with carbonated water and lemon, satisfy the needs of the MZ generation because they can be enjoyed at desired alcohol levels by adjusting the amount of whiskey and carbonated water, and various flavors can be added.
In particular, the increased accessibility due to the consecutive release of RTD canned highballs in a convenient, affordable, and portable form at convenience stores compared to regular bars has also contributed to the popularity of highballs.
Sales in the highball category at GS25 increased by 201% year-on-year as of March this year.
