A 5.3-magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:21 p.m. local time on the 3rd in the Hindu Kush region of northeastern Afghanistan.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake struck about 270 km northeast of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The epicenter was located at 36.57 degrees north latitude and 70.67 degrees east longitude. The focal depth was 190
km.Earlier in March, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake occurred 47 km southwest of Ashkasham in northeastern Afghanistan. This area is close to Pakistan and Tajikistan. The Pakistani government reported that 9 people died and 44 were injured in that earthquake. In Afghanistan, the number of casualties exceeded 50.
