The Gyeonggi-do Seed Management Office supplied 31 tons (1,531 bags/20kg each) of organic rice seeds to 631 farms in 9 cities and counties including Yangpyeong, Paju, and Anseong.
The supplied organic rice variety is 'Chamdream,' a Gyeonggi-do-developed variety that has better taste and is more resistant to pests and diseases compared to the Chucheong variety.
The price for farmers is 44,880 KRW per 20kg bag, which is the same as the price of the National Seed Management Office's general rice seed distribution varieties.
The Seed Management Office explained that this is a measure to increase accessibility to organic farming by supplying organic seeds, which are more expensive than general seeds, to farmers at a lower price.
Unlike general distribution seeds, organic seeds cannot be treated with chemical seed treatments, so thorough cold-hot water disinfection is necessary to prevent diseases such as bakanae disease.
The cold-hot water soaking method involves soaking the rice seeds in water at 60℃ for 10 minutes, followed by soaking in cold water for 10 minutes, conducted 7 to 10 days before transplanting. Care must be taken not to exceed 10 minutes in hot water to avoid seed damage.
