Gochang-gun Promotes Support Project for Removal of Old Slate Roofing

Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk Province, is undertaking the replacement of old slate roofs to protect citizens' health from asbestos, a first-class carcinogen, and to improve the living environment for vulnerable groups.

The county announced on the 27th that it has secured a budget of 1.3372 billion KRW this year to promote a project supporting the removal of old slate roofs for 330 buildings (including houses, non-residential buildings, and roof improvements).

The support amount for general households is up to 7 million KRW, a significant increase from 3.52 million KRW last year.

Recipients of basic livelihood security and lower-income groups are classified as ‘priority support households’ and receive full coverage of removal costs.

For warehouse and livestock buildings under 200㎡, full support is also available.

Additionally, the county will partially support roof improvement construction costs for 50 houses among those removing slate roofs.

Priority support households such as low-income vulnerable groups can receive up to 10 million KRW, while general households can receive up to 3 million KRW for construction costs.

Any remaining budget after meeting the allocated quota will be used to support transportation and disposal costs of stored slate.

Applications for slate removal support can be submitted at the town or township offices where the buildings are located until the 10th of next month. For more details, inquiries can be made to the county office’s Environmental Sanitation Division.

A county official stated, “We provide removal cost support for residents who have delayed removing asbestos slate roofs due to economic reasons despite knowing the risks,” adding, “We will continue to develop policies to protect citizens’ health and improve the living environment.”
