"Helping Our Children Adapt Well" Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Supports First Graders' Adjustment
Distribution of Teaching Material 'The First Step to Becoming a Happy Learner'
Training Scheduled for Grade 1 Homeroom Teachers on the 20th-21st
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 20th that it has developed and distributed a teacher's aid material titled ‘The First Step to Becoming a Happy Learner’ to help first-grade elementary school students adapt during the early stages of school admission.
The ‘early adaptation activities’ conducted in March, immediately after entering elementary school, are activities that assist the connection between kindergarten and elementary school, helping students adapt to school life by fostering basic life habits, forming proper and harmonious relationships among students, and acquiring basic learning attitudes and skills.
The 2022 revised curriculum mandates that first-grade students’ school life adaptation and initial literacy education programs be operated as career-linked education.
‘The First Step to Becoming a Happy Learner,’ published this time, is the first nationwide resource that comprehensively supports understanding of early childhood education and assistance for students with special educational needs, helping first-grade elementary students grow into ‘happy learners.’
The material is organized into 38 subtopics under six major themes: △School and Friends △Movement △Play △Safety Life △Korean Language and Writing △Drawing Shapes and Lines. Additionally, it includes guidance materials related to kindergarten life and learning as needed for each subtopic, enabling first-grade homeroom teachers to plan and conduct early adaptation activities linked with kindergartens.
Furthermore, it introduces teaching methods that can be used with students requiring special education. Through literature research, it also presents five key factors that help first-grade students adapt in the early stages of elementary school.
To enhance the utilization of the materials in schools, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education held a workshop on the 9th for first-grade teachers from 33 selected schools applying the materials, and plans to conduct training sessions for first-grade homeroom teachers over two days on the 20th and 21st.
