SKT Solves Traffic Issues by Analyzing Communication Data with AI
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] SK Telecom's technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to learn from telecommunication data and accurately measure traffic volume will be applied to the traffic impact assessment project in Seocho-gu.
On the 15th, SKT announced that it will apply and commercialize its AI-based location analysis platform ‘LITMUS’ in the ‘Digital Twin National Land-based Traffic Impact Assessment Support Model Project’ commissioned by Seocho-gu Office.
‘Digital Twin National Land’ is a pilot project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The plan is to apply data obtained through simulations in virtual space to Seocho-gu’s traffic measures.
The AI-based location analysis platform ‘LITMUS’ is a technology where AI analyzes base station location data to provide location intelligence data such as movement status and means of transportation. ‘LITMUS’ has dramatically improved location accuracy and is much more efficient in data collection and analysis, which is expected to bring significant changes to future location information businesses. For example, the existing traffic impact assessment method involved investigators surveying traffic volume and vehicle speed during a specific period, limiting the scope of data collection. ‘LITMUS’ requires no separate traffic information collection devices or investigators and can measure anywhere 365 days a year, greatly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of data collection.
Seocho-gu plans to develop a traffic impact assessment model based on telecommunication data and apply it to redevelopment project sites around Banpo-dong Express Bus Terminal. Seocho-gu intends to simulate changes in traffic volume and flow before and after redevelopment and prepare traffic measures based on this. Additionally, by providing predicted information on road congestion times and congested sections to related organizations such as the police and Seoul city, it is expected to contribute to alleviating urban traffic congestion.
In 2021, SKT was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ITS innovation technology contest (development of ITS innovation services based on high-precision telecommunication data positioning technology) by integrating the latest private sector technologies based on telecommunication data. At that time, SKT received favorable reviews for generating traffic volume data based on telecommunication big data targeting general national roads in the metropolitan area. SKT also won the smart city innovation technology verification project commissioned by Sejong City in 2022.
Going forward, SKT plans to expand the service scope from existing vehicle-centered services to various mobility subjects such as personal mobility devices like electric scooters and pedestrians by utilizing the characteristics of telecommunication data. Furthermore, by utilizing traffic and floating population information generated based on telecommunication data, SKT plans to promote telecommunication data-based projects in various fields including ▲road and traffic information generation and verification ▲ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) ▲smart mobility (shared vehicles, shared bicycles, etc.) ▲smart cities.
