Seoul City to Hold Exclusive Meeting with Jeonjangyeon on Next Month 2nd
"Open Interview as a Principle"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 26th that it proposed a one-on-one meeting to the National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Jeonjangyeon) this morning, and Jeonjangyeon responded actively, leading to a sudden agreement on the meeting.
The city had previously proposed joint meetings with Jeonjangyeon to listen to the opinions of various disability organizations related to deinstitutionalization, but the meeting on the 19th ultimately fell through due to Jeonjangyeon's refusal to participate in joint meetings.
After the breakdown of the meeting, Jeonjangyeon resumed subway boarding protests on January 20, the day before the Lunar New Year holiday, at Oido Station, Seoul Station, and Samgakji Station, demanding the reflection of the disability rights budget and meetings with the Seoul Mayor and the Minister of Strategy and Finance, causing a 27-minute delay in train operations. They also announced a large-scale protest at the end of March.
This one-on-one meeting was achieved after Mayor Oh Se-hoon instructed to propose an unconditional one-on-one meeting to Jeonjangyeon to resolve the situation. The city plans to conduct relay-style one-on-one meetings with Jeonjangyeon and other disability organizations, with the meeting scheduled to take place in the afternoon of February 2, it revealed. Furthermore, it stated that the meeting would be held publicly as a principle.
