The familiar song heard on the way to work or school early in the morning lingers in your mind all day long. It's addictive. Recently, a promotional YouTube video for ‘Changnyeong Onion and Garlic’ produced by Changnyeong County has become a hot topic.
The so-called MZ generation public officials of Changnyeong County conceived, planned, and directly appeared in the ‘Changnyeong Yangpa Song’ video, which has been uploaded on YouTube for two weeks and, as of the 13th, has reached 27,000 views, breaking records daily.
The ‘Changnyeong Yangpa Song’ video features Park Seongsu, an administrative officer from the Environmental Sanitation Division who won the bronze prize by singing ‘Naneun’ at the ‘Changnyeong Onion Song Festival with Park Seonghun’ last September. He changed the lyrics of Norazo’s beat-style song ‘Vegetable’ to promote Changnyeong onion and garlic. Public relations officers Ahn Jaeyong and Shin Hanseung appeared as backup dancers wearing onion and garlic costumes, respectively.
Wearing glitter shooters and body pants, the three backup dancers in onion and garlic costumes dance energetically to the lively song against the backdrop of Changnyeong Daeji-myeon, the birthplace of onions, the Seong family old house, and the Onion Research Institute, naturally bringing smiles and making shoulders shake. The reactions from netizens who watched this video were explosive.
“I laughed until tears came,” “Addictive beat,” “I learned from this video that Changnyeong is the birthplace of onions,” “I think I’ll think of it while sleeping. It’s stuck in my ear,” “It’s at the level of the grand prize in a national singing contest”
Officer Park’s singing ability has been recognized by colleagues and acquaintances who have gone to karaoke with him, and he was ultimately appointed as the county office’s representative for the ‘Onion Song Festival’ and won the bronze prize.
Officer Park said, “Ahn Jaeyong from the PR team, who is the same age, suggested buying fried chicken and filming a promotional video for Changnyeong to upload on YouTube.” He added, “Since we were doing it anyway, I proposed going with the new generation trend of ‘B-grade (third-rate)’ style,” revealing the behind-the-scenes story of the video’s creation.
He continued, “Chewing raw onions and garlic was really tough. Due to the hardship and laughing until spitting out several times, the filming team had a hard time with dozens of NG takes, but we were able to complete the filming and editing cheerfully.”
The promotional song video, born after two weeks of filming full of countless happenings, received explosive reactions from netizens due to its slightly quirky, drowsy flavor and catchy lyrics that stick in your ear.
The two officers who wore onion and garlic costumes as backup dancers said, “At first, it was awkward, but as we filmed more, we became eager to do our best so that more people could watch and enjoy it and that Changnyeong onion and garlic would be widely known.” They smiled brightly, adding, “If there’s another chance, we want to appear on camera ourselves.”
“Existing sophisticated and formulaic promotions tend to be rejected by younger generations. If we develop content that anyone can easily approach at a low cost, wouldn’t it save taxpayers’ money and gain the public’s love?”
