Gyeonggi Province stated on the 24th, "This agreement was made to inject new vitality into local dairy farmers who are struggling due to recent soaring feed prices and the full opening of the dairy product market under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2026, and to promote sustainable and stable growth."
The two organizations promised to jointly cooperate in increasing dairy farmers' income, expanding milk consumption, diversifying dairy cow breeds (such as Jersey), and producing, evaluating, and distributing superior genetic resources.
They also agreed to support joint surveys and research to expand animal welfare livestock farms and other necessary matters for the development of the dairy industry.
In particular, the province plans to promote the introduction and spread of new dairy cow breeds such as the Jersey breed, aiming to create new income opportunities for local dairy farmers along with advancing a future-oriented dairy industry.
Currently, the number of dairy cow farms in Gyeonggi Province is 2,283, accounting for 38% of the total 6,010 farms nationwide. The number of cows raised is 155,642, representing 40% of the national total of 389,390 cows, ranking first in the country.
Seoul Milk Cooperative processes 1,908 tons of raw milk daily, the highest in the nation, and about 60% of the 2,283 dairy farms in Gyeonggi Province are members of the cooperative. Additionally, through the Biotechnology Research Institute in Yangpyeong County, they are promoting the breeding and research of the Jersey breed.
Kim Young-soo, Director of the Livestock and Forestry Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Through this agreement, we plan to accelerate the diversification of dairy cow breeds by producing Jersey breed semen and embryos," adding, "We will continue to strive to enhance the competitiveness of Gyeonggi Province's dairy industry, and Seoul Milk is expected to greatly contribute to the development of the dairy industry."
