Prosecution Investigates Seized Items Related to Former Aide of Lawmaker No Woong-rae Accused of Bribery
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution summoned Mr. A, a former aide to Democratic Party lawmaker No Woong-rae, for analysis of seized items in connection with No's bribery case.
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-chul), which is investigating No's case, is known to have reviewed the contents extracted from No's mobile phone secured through a search and seizure against Mr. A on the 21st.
No is accused of receiving a total of 60 million won from businessman Mr. Park between February and November 2020 under the pretext of election expenses for the 21st National Assembly election (charges of bribery, mediation bribery, and violation of the Political Funds Act). Mr. Park is the individual who allegedly provided 940 million won to former Democratic Party Deputy Secretary-General Lee Jung-geun (detained and indicted) as illegal political funds and mediation fees.
It was investigated that Mr. Park, while delivering money to No, requested the prompt progress of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's real demand verification procedure for the logistics complex development project, support for the solar power business, and personnel requests related to the local tax office chief and executives of Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd.
The prosecution is also investigating the source of approximately 300 million won in cash bundles secured during a search of No's residence on the 18th. They are tracking serial numbers to specify the issuance time of the cash, suspecting that Mr. Park's money might be mixed in.
