[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it has established an accident response headquarters to assess the damage and manage the situation following the runway excursion incident involving a Korean Air passenger plane during landing at Cebu Airport in the Philippines.
According to the Ministry on the 24th, at around 12:07 AM, a passenger plane (KE631) that departed from Incheon International Airport at 6:35 PM on the 23rd and was heading to Mactan Cebu Airport made an abnormal landing at approximately 11:07 PM local time due to adverse weather conditions.
In response, the Ministry has set up an accident response headquarters led by the Director of Aviation Policy to assess the damage and manage the situation, establishing communication channels with local diplomatic missions and airlines to respond to the incident.
The passenger plane was carrying 162 passengers and 11 crew members, but no casualties have been confirmed so far. The aircraft is stopped near the runway with damage to the landing gear and the lower fuselage, resulting in the closure of the Cebu Airport runway.
Due to this incident, Jin Air flight 025, which was scheduled to depart from Incheon at 8:29 PM on the 23rd and fly to Cebu Airport with 93 passengers, was diverted to nearby Clark Airport. Additionally, Jeju Air flight 2406, carrying 177 passengers and en route from Cebu to Incheon, is currently delayed.
Jin Air flight 025, originally scheduled to depart Incheon at 7:50 PM, and Air Busan flight 771, scheduled to depart Busan at 8:00 AM, will determine their operation status after confirming the local airport situation.
Korean Air plans to continuously notify and inform passengers about the flight operation status and plans.
