[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] The Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun) has called for a thorough investigation and strict punishment regarding the death of a worker in her 20s at a bakery factory affiliated with SPC Group.
On the 19th, Minbyun stated in a press release, "The work environment prioritized productivity and profit over worker safety, making it highly vulnerable to accidents," and criticized, "At the time, the sauce mixer lacked an automatic safety device, and the two-person team work rule was not followed."
Minbyun pointed out, "A hand entrapment accident occurred at the same workplace a week before the incident, but no special measures were taken because the worker involved was a non-regular employee, and automatic safety devices to prevent subsequent accidents were not installed at that time either."
They added, "The Ministry of Employment and Labor must conduct a thorough and swift investigation, including immediate seizure and search, to determine whether SPC Group fulfilled its legal responsibility to ensure the minimum safety of workers," and "Regardless of SPC Group’s cooperation with the investigation, it must fulfill its responsibility and duty by installing safety devices such as automatic safety mechanisms to prevent recurrence of accidents."
