Elderly Driving and Shopping with VR... Nam-gu, Gwangju, Declares War on Dementia
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will operate a cognitive training program using virtual reality (VR) to prevent dementia, an elderly disease, at administrative welfare centers until December.
This program is a campaign pledge of Mayor Kim Byeong-nae in the 8th term of the local government, where participants wear a round-shaped wireless virtual reality device and train in 10 areas including concentration, memory, and reaction speed.
It is expected to improve cognitive abilities and reduce dementia-related prevalence and social costs.
About 110 elderly residents in the district are expected to participate in virtual reality training as well as horticulture and music therapy, and physical activities.
Nam-gu plans to expand this program to cognitive enhancement classes operated at senior centers and the district office from next year, and also intends to introduce a virtual reality cognitive training program guidance course into the Dementia Partner Plus education to secure practical instructors.
