"Zoonotic Disease Response"... 2nd One Health Policy Forum Held
Held Twice Annually Since 2019, This Year Marks the Final Event
[Asia Economy Reporter Byeon Seon-jin] The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced on the 13th that it held the '2022 2nd One Health Policy Forum' for systematic management and fundamental response to zoonotic infectious diseases. This forum brought together experts from various fields such as medical, veterinary, ecology, and environment, as well as officials from related ministries including health, livestock quarantine, wildlife, and defense to discuss One Health.
One Health refers to an integrated approach aimed at balancing and optimizing the health of humans, animals, and the environment. Recently, the importance of One Health has been emphasized due to the emergence of various new infectious diseases originating from zoonotic infections, climate change, antibiotic resistance, and the increase in households raising companion animals.
Since 2019, KDCA has jointly held the One Health Forum twice a year with Seoul National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and the Korean Society for Zoonoses, discussing cross-ministerial and multidisciplinary tasks related to zoonotic infectious disease response. This year marks the final year of the three-year planned One Health Forum. The forum was structured to summarize the achievements and limitations of the One Health Forum so far and to discuss future tasks.

Additionally, basic research related to One Health conducted by the 'Cross-Ministerial Infectious Disease Research and Development Project Group (GFID),' which oversees cross-ministerial research related to infectious diseases, was shared. This will serve as a foundation for future policy linkage, interdisciplinary joint research, and inter-ministerial cooperation projects. Baek Kyung-ran, Commissioner of KDCA, stated, “Zoonotic infectious diseases account for more than 75% of new infectious diseases and cause enormous socioeconomic damage worldwide during outbreaks such as COVID-19 and MERS, necessitating an integrated response from a One Health perspective.”
