Uber to Use Hyundai Ioniq 5 Robotaxi for Autonomous Driving in the US
Motional's autonomous vehicle based on Hyundai Motor Company's exclusive electric car Ioniq 5
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Autonomous driving technology company Motional announced on the 7th that it has signed a contract with Uber Technologies to provide autonomous driving services using Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5-based robotaxis.
Under this contract, Motional plans to supply a large number of robotaxis to cities across the United States for 10 years starting at the end of this year. Motional is a joint venture between the U.S. autonomous driving technology company Aptiv and Hyundai Motor Group. Uber is considered the largest ride-sharing and vehicle-hailing company in the United States. Both companies expect this contract to realize economies of scale and serve as an opportunity to expand in the global market.
Motional CEO Karl Iagnemma said, "This partnership will greatly contribute to the popularization of robotaxis," adding, "Motional has secured a roadmap to increase accessibility for millions of passengers and achieve significant growth over the next 10 years." Noah Zych, Global Head of Uber's Autonomous Mobility and Delivery division, said, "Shared autonomous vehicles will demonstrate how the future of transportation is being pioneered."

Motional has become the first autonomous driving company to provide both vehicle-hailing and delivery services within major networks like Uber. Since the Ioniq 5 is a pure electric vehicle with zero carbon emissions, it is expected to align with Uber's goal of becoming a carbon-neutral platform. Motional has been conducting autonomous food delivery for Uber Eats customers in California since early this year.
