Chungnam, Wonsando Area's 5 Islands to Form 'Marine Leisure Tourism Belt'
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province is developing five islands around Wonsando into a ‘marine leisure tourism belt’.
According to the province on the 15th, the creation of the marine leisure tourism belt is being promoted to enhance the value of the ocean in the COVID-19 era, meet the increasing demand for marine leisure tourism, expand transportation infrastructure on the west coast such as the opening of the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel, and establish a cooperative foundation among central government, local governments, private sector, and residents.
This project will invest a total of 1.12 trillion KRW, including private investment, aiming to transform Wonsando, Sapsido, Godaedo, Jangodo, and Hyojado into representative marine leisure tourism cities of the Pan Yellow Sea region by 2030.
The development concept is ‘Wonsando Awesome Islands,’ referring to Wonsando and four other islands in the area.
The province plans to first develop Wonsando as the One Set Island, the central island of the Awesome Islands, combining values of marine leisure, ecology, art, healing, youth, and family.
On the 14th, Governor Kim Tae-heum signed a ‘Marine Leisure Tourism Activation (Public-Private) Memorandum of Understanding’ in Wonsando, Boryeong, with Minister Cho Seung-hwan of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Mayor Kim Dong-il of Boryeong, CEO Seo Jun-hyuk of Daemyung Sono Group, and CEO Min Byung-so of Daemyung Sono International to create a pilot model for a complex marine leisure tourism city in Wonsando.
Additionally, Sapsido will be transformed into an ‘Art Island’ where art and nature coexist harmoniously, Godaedo into a ‘Healing Island,’ Jangodo into a ‘Youth Island,’ and Hyojado into a ‘Family Island’ where the love of family can be felt, turning them into representative tourist destinations on the west coast.
The three main strategies set for this are establishing marine leisure hubs, developing tourism resources, and building tourism infrastructure.
The promotion tasks include ▲establishing the Wonsando Marine Sports Center ▲constructing the Wonsando complex marina port ▲developing the Wonsando healthcare complex ▲restoring the Wonsando tidal flat ecosystem ▲creating the Sapsido Art Island ▲hosting an island international biennale ▲building the Sunset Islands Sea Station ▲developing the Wonsando Daemyung Sono Resort tourist complex ▲installing marine tourism cable cars between Wonsando and Sapsido, totaling nine projects.
The province plans to focus on building a west coast marine tourism belt by creating a global marine leisure tourism city, while also revitalizing the tourism industry and local economy in the area and promoting balanced national development.
Meanwhile, the day before in Wonsando, Governor Kim Tae-heum of Chungnam signed the ‘Marine Leisure Tourism Activation (Public-Private) Memorandum of Understanding’ with Minister Cho Seung-hwan of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Mayor Kim Dong-il of Boryeong, CEO Seo Jun-hyuk of Daemyung Sono Group, and CEO Min Byung-so of Daemyung Sono International.
