Yoo Seung-min: "President Yoon Must Personally Lead as Commander to Overcome Low Birthrate"
"Welfare and Education Ministries Lack Ministers... Low Birthrate and Aging Society Committee Also on Hiatus"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Yoo Seung-min, former member of the People Power Party, sharply criticized the low birthrate issue on the 8th, saying, "The key ministries, the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education, do not even have ministers yet, and the Low Birthrate and Aging Society Committee is also on hiatus."
On the same day, through his Facebook, former lawmaker Yoo said, "I offer advice to the Yoon Suk-yeol administration from a different dimension than the immediate economic crisis. I hope they make overcoming the low birthrate the top national agenda and mobilize all policy means."
Yoo emphasized, "The president must take the lead as the commander in overcoming the low birthrate," adding, "In all related fields such as childcare and education, jobs and unemployment, parental leave, maternity leave, housing, and social insurance, policy goals should be aligned with 'overcoming the low birthrate,' and budgets and laws must be revised accordingly."
He continued, "Whether it is an economic issue or a population issue, the reason the president and government exist is to create new hope from despair."
Additionally, Yoo said, "We must wisely cope with the triple hardships of inflation, exchange rates, and interest rates. In a situation where interest rate hikes are inevitable, all measures must be devised to stabilize prices and exchange rates as quickly as possible," and stated, "Although it feels already late and not easy, it is time to persuade the U.S. to reinstate the Korea-U.S. currency swap that ended last year."
Yoo added, "The government’s ability to prioritize and sequence short-term and long-term, macro and micro policies is required," and said, "Only after putting out the urgent fires of the crisis can the government start reforms in labor, education, pensions, and so on."
