Song Buyong, 16th Director of Gyeongnam Research Institute, "Contributing to Gyeongnam's Development through Research Achievements"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Dr. Song Buyong, who served as the Director of Research Planning at the Gyeongnam Research Institute, has been inaugurated as the 16th Director of the Gyeongnam Research Institute.
New Director Song assumed the position after the board resolution on August 19 and personnel verification by the Planning and Administration Committee of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council on August 29.
Director Song's inauguration marks the first appointment of an executive of an invested and endowed institution by Governor Park Wansu of Gyeongnam Province. Director Song received his appointment letter from Governor Park on the 7th and began his duties.
According to the province, Director Song is originally from Hadong, Gyeongnam, graduated from Dongguk University, and earned his master's and doctoral degrees from the graduate schools of the same university and Oklahoma State University in the United States.
He has held positions such as Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the Gyeongnam Research Institute, Acting Director, Special Committee Member of the Presidential Advisory Northeast Asia Era Committee, 7th President of the Korean Regional Economics Association, Special Economic Advisor to Gyeongsangnam-do, Head of the Technology Innovation Promotion Group at Gyeongnam Technopark, and Expert Member of the Regional Industry and Jobs Subcommittee of the Presidential Regional Development Committee.
He has also served as an advisor and evaluation committee member for various central government ministries including the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
Since joining the Gyeongnam Research Institute, Director Song has devoted himself to research for the development of all industries in Gyeongnam, establishment of regional economic policies and strategies for fostering four major strategic industries, rural development, the 3rd Comprehensive Plan for Gyeongsangnam-do, and fields such as science and technology, employment, and jobs for the advancement of Gyeongnam.
Director Song stated, “The Gyeongnam Research Institute will contribute to the future strategy of Gyeongnam Province and the welfare and maximization of happiness of its residents through future-oriented and progressive practical research outcomes.”

He added, “We will focus on research to restore the economic power of the Gyeongnam region, which has been stagnant for over 10 years, and meet the increasing demands in welfare, environment, culture, and tourism sectors, thereby leading to the development of the 8th term of Governor Park Wansu’s administration in Gyeongnam. We plan to operate the institute with the goal of making the Gyeongnam Research Institute the best research institution in the country.”
