[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] "'Thanks to the audience who loved 'Confidential Assignment,' a sequel became possible. We put a lot of thought into telling a better story."(Hyun Bin)
The 2017 film 'Confidential Assignment,' which attracted 7.81 million viewers, returns with a sequel after five years. Following the success of the original film released during the Lunar New Year holiday, will it also capture the box office during the Chuseok holiday?
Director Lee Seok-hoon, who directed 'Dancing Queen' (2012), 'The Himalayas' (2015), and 'The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure' (2014), took the helm. At the press screening of the movie 'Confidential Assignment 2: International' held on the afternoon of the 30th at CGV Yongsan in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Director Lee expressed confidence, saying, "We enhanced the comedy compared to the previous film," and "It will be a movie that families can enjoy together during the Chuseok holiday."
He continued, "If Rim Cheol-ryeong was a character burning with revenge in the first film, he has become freer in the second. The part I am confident about in the sequel is the comedy, which was a focus during the screenplay process."
The film depicts an unpredictable triangular cooperative investigation by North Korean detective Rim Cheol-ryeong, South Korean detective Kang Jin-tae, and a new face, overseas FBI agent Jack, who come together with their own purposes to catch a global crime organization. Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin reprise their roles in the joint investigation. Hyun Bin plays the North Korean detective who returns to South Korea with a new mission, while Yoo Hae-jin plays the South Korean detective who returns to the Gwangsu Police Department to join the investigation.
On this day, Hyun Bin said, "Since we worked together in the first film, I acted without any burden," and shared, "I enjoyed working much more." Yoo Hae-jin also expressed satisfaction, saying, "There was a sense of comfort and closeness. It was a free time."
The reunion of Hyun Bin and Daniel Henney is also noteworthy. The two actors reunited after 17 years since the drama 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon.' Daniel, who joined as an FBI agent, said, "It was nice to meet Hyun Bin again in a project," and added, "I enjoyed working with such excellent actors." He emphasized, "The energy of a big project comes from the leader, and Hyun Bin did a great job fulfilling the leader role."

They also paid great attention to the action scenes, continuing from the previous film. Gunfights in the middle of New York, car chases, wire stunts, and hand-to-hand combat unfold relentlessly. The director revealed, "The action stood out in the previous film, so I thought a lot about showing action that is just as impressive." He added, "We put a lot of effort into the early New York action scenes to immerse the audience in the movie."
