[2023 Early Admission] Sungkyunkwan University, Interview Exams for 6 Departments... Others Selected 100% by Documents
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Sungkyunkwan University will select 2,137 students, accounting for 59.2% of the total 3,612 recruits (including those outside the quota) in the 2023 academic year admissions through early admission. They will recruit 1,300 students through the Comprehensive Student Record Screening, 370 through the Student Record Screening, 360 through the Essay Excellence Screening, and 107 through the Practical/Performance (Arts and Physical Education Special Talent/Practical Excellence) Screening.
The Comprehensive Student Record Screening is divided into 'Division Recruitment' (417 students), 'Department Recruitment' (630 students), 'Equal Opportunity' (60 students), and 'Special Screening Outside the Quota' (193 students). Division Recruitment selects candidates 100% based on documents (student records and self-introduction letters). Department Recruitment selects candidates 100% based on documents except for six departments (Pre-Medicine, Education, Chinese Character Education, Mathematics Education, Computer Education, Sports Science) that require interviews. For these six departments, in the first stage, candidates are selected at about three times the number of available spots based on total document evaluation scores, and in the second stage, final successful candidates are selected based on a total score combining 80% of the first stage document score and 20% of the interview score. The Comprehensive Student Record Screening does not apply minimum CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) score requirements or mandatory CSAT subject areas for any of the four detailed screening types.
Division Recruitment broadly selects from five units: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, and the Global Convergence Division, allowing students sufficient time to explore majors in their first year and enter specific departments (major selection) in their second year. Department Recruitment is conducted by major reservation systems and department/major units. Therefore, when applying to Sungkyunkwan University, it is advisable to first select the desired recruitment unit and then choose the corresponding screening type. Also, if the screening types differ, such as between Division Recruitment and Department Recruitment, multiple applications are allowed.
The screening materials for the Comprehensive Student Record Screening are student records and self-introduction letters. Admission decisions are not solely based on GPA rankings but on a customized comprehensive qualitative evaluation reflecting the student's characteristics, selecting students who have diligently completed the high school curriculum with talent and enthusiasm. The Equal Opportunity Screening targets national veterans, residents of the West Sea Five Islands, rural students (those who have completed 6 or 12 years of education and reside in rural areas), low-income families, graduates of specialized high schools, and persons with disabilities, evaluated 100% based on documents. The Equal Opportunity Screening selects 60 students. The Special Screening Outside the Quota targets rural students (100 students), specialized high school graduates (23 students), neighbors in need (60 students), and persons with disabilities (10 students), also evaluated 100% based on documents. Neither the Equal Opportunity Screening nor the Special Screening Outside the Quota applies minimum CSAT score requirements under the Comprehensive Student Record Screening.
The Student Record Screening will recruit 370 students this year. Applicants must be high school graduates expected in 2023 and recommended by their high school principal. Minimum CSAT score requirements apply, and evaluation is based 100% on student record grades. The Essay Excellence Screening will recruit 360 students this year, including 5 students in the Pre-Medicine department starting this year. Minimum CSAT score requirements apply, and from this year, student records are no longer considered; evaluation is 100% based on essays. Both humanities and natural sciences applicants will be given three questions each with a total time of 100 minutes. Notably, starting this year, the natural sciences essay will only include mathematics questions.
The Practical/Performance (Arts and Physical Education Special Talent) Screening recruits for the Sports Science and Visual Arts departments, selecting 22 and 5 students respectively, totaling 27 students. The Practical/Performance (Arts and Physical Education Practical Excellence) Screening recruits for Acting Arts (Acting and Directing), Dance (Korean Dance, Ballet, Contemporary Dance), and Sports Science, selecting a total of 80 students. This screening also conducts multi-stage selection but does not require submission of separate activity verification documents, and applicants for Acting and Dance do not submit self-introduction letters. Since eligibility, screening elements and their weighting, required documents, practical test methods, and dates vary by department, applicants must carefully check the recruitment guidelines before applying.

Sungkyunkwan University does not consider student records in regular admissions and selects candidates 100% based on CSAT scores (except for Pre-Medicine, which includes P/F personality interviews, and Arts (Fine Arts), which includes practical tests). They plan to recruit 721 students in Group A and 754 students in Group B, with numbers subject to change depending on the number of early admission rollovers. Multiple applications to both Group A and Group B are allowed, and special screenings are conducted only if there are rollovers from early admissions.
