Porsche AG Unveils New Porsche 911 GT3 R
New 911 GT3 R Eligible to Compete Starting from the 2023 Season
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Porsche AG announced on the 31st that it will unveil the new customer racing car Porsche 911 GT3 R, based on the current 992 generation 911. The Porsche 911 GT3 R for the global GT3 series aims to participate in races starting from the 2023 season.
Michael Dreiser, Porsche Motorsport Sales Director, emphasized, "The new 911 GT3 R is a model that must meet the expectations of customer drivers worldwide, and all teams are fully dedicated to vehicle development. The previous model boasts a successful history over four seasons since 2019 in the GT3 series, including overall victories at the N?rburgring 24 Hours endurance race and the Spa-Francorchamps event, as well as class wins at the Daytona 24 Hours and Sebring 12 Hours races."
Since the GT3 class was announced as a professional category in the North American IMSA series, from 2024 onwards, GT3 racing cars like the new 911 GT3 R will be able to participate in the Le Mans 24 Hours race for the first time.
The new racing car’s core is the engine based on the 992 generation 911 powerplant. Like the previous model, it is equipped with a water-cooled 6-cylinder horizontally opposed engine featuring 4-valve technology and direct fuel injection. Similar to the 911 RSR, the displacement of the new 911 GT3 R has increased by 5 percent from 3,997cc to 4,194cc, delivering a maximum output of 565 horsepower (PS). Above all, the 4.2-liter 6-cylinder engine is optimized for torque and power curves across the entire rev range, making it more suitable for customer racing.
The classic rear-positioned high-revving 6-cylinder engine improves traction and braking performance even without a turbocharger. It is tilted forward by 5.5 degrees to create space for the underbody diffuser. Auxiliary components such as the alternator and air conditioning compressor have been moved to the front of the engine and gearbox, contributing to weight balance. The sequential 6-speed contest-mesh gearbox is derived from the current 911 GT3 Cup. Shift paddles control an electronic shift drum actuator, enabling faster and more precise gear changes.
The suspension of the new 911 GT3 R, with various improved details, supports drivability and enables precise steering while reducing rear tire wear and shortening setup times. To achieve this, numerous components and technical solutions from the 911 RSR have been applied. The front axle features a state-of-the-art double wishbone layout controlling the wheels, while the rear axle uses a multi-link design.
The new 911 GT3 R is Porsche Motorsport’s second racing car based on the 992 generation 911, following the 911 GT3 Cup. The lightweight body, designed with an intelligent aluminum-steel composite material derived from the production model, has been modified for the 911 GT3 R. Most body components, including the front and rear, doors, side panels, rear wing, and roof, use lightweight carbon, while the wheel arches are made of aramid fiber.

Additionally, the new 911 GT3 R follows a philosophy of uncompromising stability. The seat has been moved closer to the center of the vehicle, and together with an enhanced roll cage, the ergonomics of the seat position have been optimized with a newly developed FIA side impact protection system. As before, the driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals laterally.
