Request for Cooperation to Secure Autonomy for 'Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province'
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province has launched all-out efforts to achieve its national budget securing target of 8.7 trillion won for next year.
Gangwon Province announced on the 10th that "Governor Kim Jin-tae met with Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Choo Kyung-ho at the Government Seoul Office Building on the 9th to explain the key projects of Gangwon Province for 2023 and requested the government's full support."
Governor Kim proposed to Deputy Prime Minister Choo to include national funding for major provincial projects such as ▲ installation of the Seoraksan Osaek Cable Car ▲ fostering a city centered on the e-mobility industry ▲ establishing a hydrogen energy hub city ▲ early commencement of the 2nd Gyeongchun National Road ▲ and tourism development in abandoned mining areas.
In particular, he anticipated environmental impact assessment consultations within the year for the 'Seoraksan Osaek Cable Car installation' project, a representative pledge of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration for Gangwon Province, and requested positive government consideration.
He emphasized that the projects to 'foster a city centered on the e-mobility industry' and to 'establish a hydrogen energy hub city' are new growth engines for Gangwon Province and essential projects from the perspective of national balanced development.
Regarding the newly launched 'Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province' starting in June next year, he also requested attention and cooperation to ensure autonomy rights such as various regulatory reforms and legislative exceptions.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Choo reportedly said, "The Ministry of Economy and Finance will also diligently take care of the projects proposed by Gangwon Province and the issues related to the Special Self-Governing Province."

Meanwhile, Governor Kim stated, "To smoothly promote core pledge projects and pending issues, I plan to continuously visit related ministries such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance to explain the necessity of budget inclusion," and added, "From the stage of government budget formulation and review to the National Assembly's approval, we will make every effort to secure national funding."
