Korean Air Pilots Union Member Vote... '10% Wage Increase Proposal' Rejected
Opposition 58.1% VS Support 41.9%
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The tentative wage negotiation agreement prepared by Korean Air management and the pilots' labor union was rejected in a vote by union members.
According to the Korean Air union on the 5th, out of 2,054 pilots' union members who voted on the tentative wage increase agreement, 1,193 (58.1%) voted against it, while 861 (41.9%) voted in favor.
Previously, Korean Air and the pilots' union had agreed to freeze wages in 2020 and 2021 and to increase the total wage amount by 10% in 2022. It is interpreted that the pilots' union members were dissatisfied with the two-year wage freeze despite the company recording its highest performance during the COVID-19 pandemic period.
The pilots' union executive committee plans to hold a meeting soon to review future response measures.
The general union also agreed to a 10% wage increase, similar to the pilots' union. The increase proposal was approved in a union member vote. Among 3,565 general union members, 2,341 (65.6%) voted in favor, and 1,210 (33.9%) voted against.
