[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] The number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea has slightly increased compared to a week ago.
On the 24th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight, 7,227 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total cumulative cases to 18,312,993.
The number of new cases on this day increased by 32 compared to 7,195 cases reported on the 17th, a week earlier. It decreased by 270 cases compared to the previous day. The daily new cases have remained below 10,000 for 15 consecutive days since the 10th.
The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized is 52, remaining in the 50s for the second consecutive day. This is a decrease of 6 from 58 the previous day. The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 5.2%, with 4.5% in the metropolitan area and 7.6% in non-metropolitan areas.
The number of new COVID-19 related deaths is 10. Among them, 7 were aged 80 or older, the highest number, followed by 1 in their 70s and 2 in their 60s. The total cumulative deaths stand at 24,498, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.
With 7,334 new patients added to home treatment the previous day, the total number of patients currently under home treatment is 41,365. Among them, 1,878 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions.

As of midnight on the 23rd, the COVID-19 treatment drug Veklury (Remdesivir) has been administered to 88,303 patients. The oral antiviral Paxlovid has been prescribed for 258,763 patients, and Lagevrio for 22,858 patients. Accordingly, the current remaining stock of Paxlovid is 805,758 doses, and Lagevrio is 78,006 doses.
