KAIST and 4 Other Universities Selected as Future Space Talent Development Institutions
Ministry of Science and ICT to Announce Review Results on the 10th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Five universities, including Pusan National University, KAIST, Inha University, Gyeongsang National University, and Sejong University, have been selected as educational institutions to nurture future space talents.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 10th that it has finalized the selection of five universities to establish Future Space Education Centers responsible for challenging future space technology education and research.
In the field of space transportation technology, Pusan National University was selected; in space communication technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST); and in space exploration and resource utilization, Inha University was chosen. In the open competition category, Gyeongsang National University, which proposed the ‘Research Center for Core Technologies of High-Reliability, Low-Cost Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellation Systems,’ and Sejong University, which proposed the ‘Future Space Navigation and Satellite Technology Research Center,’ were selected.
These five universities will establish Future Space Education Centers by field and provide intensive education on future space technologies to master's and doctoral students, nurturing them as key experts who will lead the international space sector. They will also collaborate with research institutes and space industries to link practical field training and employment support, and operate international cooperation programs to strengthen global capabilities. To this end, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to support each center with 1 billion KRW annually for the next five years, totaling 5 billion KRW.

Kwon Hyun-jun, Director of the Large-Scale Public Research Policy Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “Starting with the five universities’ Future Space Education Centers selected by field this time, we will focus on supporting education and research in future space technology to lay the foundation for becoming one of the top seven space powers.” He added, “We will continue efforts to nurture space experts to create youth jobs considering corporate demand and to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic space industry.”
