Jeju Fire Headquarters to Implement 'Hazardous Materials Transporter Qualification System' on June 10
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters announced on the 24th that from June 10th, the hazardous materials transporter qualification system will be fully implemented, and anyone intending to perform hazardous materials transportation duties must obtain the relevant qualifications or complete training courses.
A hazardous materials transporter refers to a driver of a vehicle (such as a cargo truck) that transports containers loaded with hazardous materials that have a high risk of fire or explosion in large quantities.
The Hazardous Materials Safety Control Act, which includes provisions that hazardous materials transporters without relevant qualifications transporting hazardous materials will be subject to a fine of up to 10 million won, was amended and promulgated in June 2020, with a two-year grace period, and will be fully enforced on June 10th.
Accordingly, hazardous materials transporters must obtain national technical qualifications related to hazardous materials (Hazardous Materials Master Craftsman, Industrial Engineer, Technician) or complete training courses (Korea Fire Safety Institute).
The Fire Safety Headquarters plans to strengthen publicity such as guidance on the amended laws and meetings with related parties for relevant workplaces in the province as the grace period approaches.
In addition, regular street inspections will be conducted in the future, and if transportation of hazardous materials without qualifications is detected, strict measures will be taken according to relevant laws.
A Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters official said, “Those engaged in hazardous materials transportation duties must thoroughly understand the amended laws and ensure they meet the requirements to avoid any disadvantages.”
