View original image[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Wooseok] A teenage girl who led a 'cyberbullying' campaign against a high school girl who took an extreme step two years ago has been sentenced to probation. The student was also the perpetrator in the 'Assault on Disabled High School Girl with Filth' case that occurred in Incheon last year.
The Incheon District Court Criminal Division 1 (Judge Oh Gidu) announced on the 17th that A (18), who was indicted on charges including defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, was sentenced to two years in prison with four years of probation and ordered to undergo probation.
A was charged with defaming B (16 at the time in 2020) by spreading false information in a social networking service (SNS) group chat on September 25, 2020, claiming that B was sexually promiscuous and active as a 'iljin' (delinquent).
At that time, the chat room included B as well as her boyfriend and seven other teenagers.
Three days later, A created a new SNS group chat and invited B and her friends, sending messages such as "You dirty X. I will beat you up. You deserve to be hit."
Investigations revealed that A had previously sent harsh insults to B via SNS messages and threatened to spread rumors about her being sexually promiscuous. A also extorted 35,000 won in cash by threatening B to bring money and committed assault by slapping her.
C (18), an accomplice who revealed in the chat room that B had been sexually assaulted in 2019, was also indicted for defamation alongside A but avoided criminal punishment as the court decided to transfer him to the juvenile division.
B took an extreme step in September 2020, ten days before the sentencing trial of the sexual assault perpetrator. The perpetrator was sentenced to imprisonment ranging from five years to three years and six months for rape under the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles Against Sexual Abuse.
A was previously arrested and indicted for the 'Incheon Disabled High School Girl Filth Assault Case' last year and was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison in the first trial but was released after receiving a one-year prison sentence with two years probation on appeal. C also received a one-year prison sentence with two years probation for this case.
In June 2021, they assaulted a high school girl with a level 3 intellectual disability at a motel in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, by pressing her head into a toilet bowl and pouring filth such as cigarette butts from an ashtray and shampoo on her body.
The court stated, "Although A is a juvenile, she defamed the victim in a group chat, continuously harassed her by extorting money and assaulting her. The victim, a 16-year-old first-year high school student, took an extreme step at a young age without having a chance to live her life properly," and added, "Considering that A made no effort to seek forgiveness from the victim's parents and seems to have an attitude that disregards legal order, which appears to be ingrained in her character," explaining the sentencing rationale.
