Japanese Embassy Staff in Ukraine Evacuate to Poland
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated embassy staff from the temporary liaison office located in Lviv, western Ukraine, to Poland due to the worsening situation in Ukraine.
Kyodo News reported on the 8th that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this announcement. It has been six days since the embassy in the capital Kyiv (Kiyev) was temporarily closed on the 2nd and operations were transferred to the liaison office established in Lviv.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs judged that the local risk increased as the Ukraine situation became more urgent and evacuated embassy staff to Poland. The day before, Russia designated Japan, along with South Korea, the United States, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, and Canada, as unfriendly countries.
As of the 6th, about 90 Japanese nationals remain in Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans not to close the Lviv liaison office and to resume operations once the situation stabilizes.
