[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Self-employed business owners who have suffered damage due to COVID-19 quarantine measures have come out in support of Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party.
On the 25th, members of the Korea COVID-19 Victims Self-Employed Federation (Koja Federation) and 29 affiliated organizations held a press conference at 4 p.m. in Yeouido, Seoul, officially declaring their support for candidate Yoon. Koja Federation is a civic organization composed of self-employed groups such as the Korea Central Association of Entertainment Food Service, the Korea Central Association of Barbershops, and the Korea Central Association of Rest Food Service.
The organizations defined the current government's COVID-19 loss compensation payment policy as abusive and expressed trust in candidate Yoon, who promised full loss compensation. They also explained that the People Power Party has consistently advocated for retroactive application of loss compensation as a party stance.
In their statement, Koja Federation said, “If the Democratic Party of Korea returns to power, 7 million small business owners and self-employed people will again become targets of abuse,” and claimed, “Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, did not provide a single penny of support to self-employed business owners during his tenure as governor of Gyeonggi Province.”
Min Sang-heon, co-representative of Koja Federation, said, “Over the past week, we met with self-employed related organizations to analyze the pledges and statements of presidential candidates,” and added, “As a result of voting, candidate Yoon received the most votes, leading to this declaration of support.”
